I got all vulnerable in a social media post. I admitted that the pandemic seemed to sap my creativity. Or, maybe I should say, that the typical ways that I apply my creative energy were dry. What creative energy I had left was showing up in places that I hadn’t imagined before the pandemic started.

The experience, and coming out of it, prompted these questions to explore where the creative energy I used to have was being siphoned off. While the pandemic was huge factor, it’s not the first time that it has happened. And, it’s not the only factor that plays a role.

Rekindling Creative Energy

Your (and my) creative energy may be disappearing elsewhere, so you need to explore whether it’s really being expressed in any of these ways:

  • Are you learning in new areas where you 've been focusing a lot of your attention?
  • Are you facing more sameness in your life and activities than you were previously?
  • Are you processing major life decisions?
  • Do you have an overload of physical or mental clutter in your life right now?
  • Is something fundamental to your creative process broken or on the fritz right now?
  • Are you placing too much pressure on yourself for creative results in familiar areas?

If you’re answering “Yes” to one or more of those questions, that could be a big part of why you feel your creative energy isn’t what it used to be.

Creative thinking techniques can help you to keep generating creative output even with lower energy. Ultimately, though, you need to address what’s off in your life situation to spark your creativity to amazing levels again.

I’ll let you know when I get there myself. - Mike Brown
